They were looking for someone to build a monument for the event. The task went to Alexandre Gustave Eiffel whom the Eiffel tower is named after. The Eiffel tower became a monumental site for community events, stunts, and also became and inspiration for other countries landmarks. Today its one of the most recognized landmarks on the planet. During the world wars it was a hiding place for spies. It takes around 500 people to maintain the Eiffel tower, and also run the in-ground restaurant.
